Alan Shearer shuts down Gary Lineker’s mocking as Erling Haaland shatters his record

The Norwegian scored Manchester City’s second goal in their 3-0 win over West Ham on Wednesday evening, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer in a single season. It propelled him ahead of Newcastle legends Shearer and Andrew Cole.

The goal was certainly worthy of the record, as he grabbed onto a magnificent ball from Jack Grealish before directing home a superb chip. Haaland is expected to add to his tally before the conclusion of the season, but for the time being, he can celebrate his 35th Premier League goal of the season.

Gary Lineker, the host of Match of the Day, teased his colleague Shearer via Twitter. “A Premier League record for @ErlingHaaland,” he wrote. 35 goals. That’s insane. At this difficult time, my thoughts are with @alanshearer.”

Shearer then responded to Haaland’s goal-scoring accomplishment with his own perspective. “Couldn’t have gone to a nicer guy,” the ex-striker wrote. It only took 28 years!!!! He’s the finest,” he said, accompanied by a slew of applauding emojis.

It’s not surprising to see Shearer congratulate the Manchester City sensation on his achievement. He anticipated in March that he would break the record before the end of the season.

“He’ll do it,” he stated to Amazon Prime Video Sport. I was planning on congratulating him tonight because it’s only a matter of time before he gets it.

“I’d be the first to shake his hand, it’s going to go. I really enjoy his attitude, I love his desire and I love what he was saying about not sleeping at night when he doesn’t score goals because that’s what a goalscorer is.

“I love everything about him and as I’ve said beforehand, if you’re building the perfect centre forward he is it and I think he’s almost perfect, and he’s playing in a great team.”

Haaland will be looking to add to his record and make it relatively unbreakable in the final weeks of the season as he bids to lead Manchester City to the Premier League title. Before the end of the season, the reigning champions will face Leeds, Everton, Chelsea, and Brighton.

Aside from the domestic title, City hopes to become only the second team in Premier League history to win the treble. They play close rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final, as well as Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.
