Chelsea are one step closer to stealing Manchester United’s goalkeeper after reaching a ‘deal’ with him.

This summer, the Blues have been connected with Diogo Costa and have gone one step closer to signing him.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have secured an agreement to sell goalkeeper Edouard Mendy this summer. The transfer guru said that a verbal agreement had been made with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli over a swap, despite the uncertainties surrounding the Senegalese goalkeeper’s future.

Mendy’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in two years, and with no movement on an extension in recent months, an exit seemed the most likely solution. The 31-year-old inspired the Blues to a memorable Champions League victory in 2021, but his form and injury record have been a source of concern since.

With such concerns in mind, the transfer may be beneficial for all parties concerned, with Mendy agreeing to a three-year deal with Al-Ahli, with only contract signing and confirmation remaining. The goalie is expected to join a slew of other Chelsea players in the Saudi league.

Following the announcement of a large investment into football teams by the Saudi state’s Public Investment Fund, a recruiting drive for the top names has been underway. N’Golo Kante, a Chelsea player, was confirmed as an Al-Ittihad player late Tuesday night.

Hakim Ziyech has accepted to terms with Al-Nassr, and Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have also been linked with moves. While Mendy appears to be the next to go, Chelsea is one step closer to requiring a replacement goalkeeper for next season.
