Chelsea Faces Potential Embarrassment as Agent Wins Award for Navigating Club into Significant Deal
Following Todd Boehly’s acquisition of Chelsea last year, the team has been active in the transfer market.
Ali Barat, the agent of Moises Caicedo, is expected to receive the Golden Agent Award for 2023, which could leave Chelsea stunned. Caicedo left Brighton in August for Chelsea, paying a transfer fee that could eventually reach a British record of £115 million. However, the midfield player has not impressed in his first few years at Stamford Bridge.

During his Brighton tenure, Caicedo was highly sought-after, with Arsenal and Liverpool vying for his signature. The 22-year-old Ecuadorian international, who has 38 caps and was a standout performer for his nation in the World Cup in Qatar last year, looked set to sign a £110 million contract with Liverpool. However, it is reported that he made a last-minute decision to sign an eight-year contract in west London.

Barat, who also represents Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea, was crucial in getting his client a high-profile transfer. Additionally, the Liverpool Echo reports that on Monday night in Turin, he will receive his award.

After Caicedo had signed for the Blues, Barat explained: “Chelsea did an excellent investment by signing Moises. The player will receive £150,000 per week. He was on £60,000 per week at Brighton. He’s a mix between [Jude] Bellingham and N’Golo Kante.”
Caicedo has made fourteen appearances for Chelsea. But the Blues have only won four of their 13 Premier League games this season, suggesting that his presence in west London hasn’t inspired his teammates. And since coming to the capital, the midfield ace hasn’t exactly made an impression.

Declan Rice’s luck has not been the same as Caicedo’s. The £100 million summer transfer window saw the England international join Arsenal from West Ham, and the Gunners have found him to be a revelation. His efforts have enabled the North London giants to advance to the Champions League knockout stages and take second place in the Premier League standings.

In October, Caicedo’s other agent Manuel Sierra explained to the Ecuadorian channel Football sin Cassette why the player was forced to wait until the summer to sign with the Blues instead of attempting to do so in the January transfer window of the previous campaign. He explained, “What happened is that [Chelsea] couldn’t pay in January.”

They couldn’t sign both [Enzo Fernandez and Caicedo], so they had to choose one or the other. They couldn’t go crazy. Furthermore, I had no idea what Brighton would demand—they wouldn’t sell for even £1 billion.
