Chelsea is planning a surprise return of a former star with a £70.5 million buy-back clause set to be exercised this summer.

Chelsea are reportedly considering bringing back a former forward this summer when his £70.5 million buy-back clause comes in.

Despite spending £600 million on transfers since taking over the club, Todd Boehly and his Clearlake Capital co-investors have failed to replace Romelu Lukaku for first Thomas Tuchel and now Graham Potter.

With a Chelsea side that is struggling to score goals, Kai Havertz continues to play more as a ‘false nine,’ with Potter having a plethora of wingers and offensive midfielders to choose from.

Romelu Lukaku is now on loan at Inter Milan but has no plans to return to Stamford Bridge, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is rarely given a chance despite being the most obvious fit for the position.

Victor Osimhen of Napoli is also on Chelsea’s radar, but his price might skyrocket in a summer bidding war.

According to Football Insider, Tammy Abraham could be on his way back to Stamford Bridge.

ROOF represents the Roma forward, who is also a target for Manchester United. ROOF also represents current Chelsea forward Kai Havertz.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues have a £70.5 million option to bring back their former striker.

That buy-back clause is expected to kick in this summer, marking two years since Abraham’s move to Italy.

The return of Abraham might be exactly what Chelsea requires.

This season, the England attacker has seven goals and five assists in 32 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s team.

His level has dipped slightly after his excellent 2021-22 season, when he scored 27 goals as Roma won the European Conference League for the first time.

Abraham’s best goal-scoring season in England came under Frank Lampard in west London.

Abraham, whose contract with Roma expires in June 2026, scored 15 goals in 2019-20, but no Chelsea player has done so in the three seasons since.

Havertz is the Blues’ leading scorer this season, with a meager five league goals.

Chelsea will have to face the fact that they are unlikely to have any fresh additions from European football.
