Chelsea Players React to Frank Lampard’s Appointment with Jokes in the Dressing Room

Chelsea’s Premier League campaign is all but over, or at least their hunt for a top-four spot is.

After Tuesday’s uninspiring with Liverpool, the west Londoners find themselves in 11th, 14 points behind fourth-place Manchester United, having played a game more.

Their final chance of Champions League qualification for next season’s competition is lifting their third title in Istanbul in June.

Before the news of Frank Lampard’s return became official, Chelsea players joked about it, as details of the dressing room mood emerged.

Rumors of Frank Lampard’s surprise return to Chelsea were met with laughter in the Cobham dressing room, according to reports. The mood in the Blues’ camp, however, has been described as upbeat following Lampard’s interim appointment until the end of the season.

Chelsea fired Graham Potter on Sunday, capping off a disastrous seven-month tenure that began when he replaced Thomas Tuchel in September.

Few would have predicted Lampard would be in charge for Saturday’s trip to Wolves.

That sentiment was reportedly shared by his newly inherited squad after details of the behind-the-scenes reaction to his return became public.

Lampard’s presence at Stamford Bridge for Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool sparked speculation about a possible second stint in place of the inexperienced Bruno Saltor.

However, the Independent reports that some Chelsea players thought the early speculation about his return as their new manager was a joke.

According to the report, other jabs were aimed at players who had tainted relationships with Lampard prior to his January 2021 departure.

Antonio Rudiger, in particular, had a falling out with the 44-year-old, and he will face him for Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals next week.

Some players were said to have disagreed with the way Lampard spoke to them near the end of his unsuccessful first stint as manager.

However, the Independent reports that he assured his new team that this time would be different, with previous grievances forgotten.

That stance appears to have encouraged Chelsea’s underdogs, contributing to a positive atmosphere around the club ahead of his first game back.

Chelsea’s Premier League season is nearly over, or at least their pursuit of a top-four spot is.

Following Tuesday’s uninspiring draw with Liverpool, the west Londoners are in 11th place, 14 points behind fourth-place Manchester United, despite having played one more game.

Lifting their third title in Istanbul in June will be their last chance to qualify for the Champions League for next season.

Given that Chelsea would have to beat Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, or Manchester City to reach the final, such a feat could earn Lampard a longer stay.
