Chelsea Star Ben Chilwell Set for a Prolonged Spell on the Sidelines as Pochettino’s Injury Woes Deepen

Ben Chilwell is expected to miss at least eight weeks due to a hamstring injury he sustained against Brighton last month. The fullback faces a long road to recovery. The England international suffered a hamstring injury during Chelsea’s Carabao Cup victory over Brighton, and Mauricio Pochettino admitted that it did not look good.

The 26-year-old was not included in Chelsea’s matchday roster for Monday’s league match against Fulham after being relegated to the bench for their previous two league contests. According to the Telegraph, Chilwell will need at least two months to recover from his latest injury setback.

Depending on how Chilwell’s rehabilitation progresses, the report indicates that he may not be ready for a busy Christmas schedule. It is a devastating setback for Pochettino, who has dealt with numerous injury issues since taking over at Stamford Bridge.

Christopher Nkunku, Reece James, Romeo Lavia, and Wesley Fofana have been absent for an extended period of time. Moises Caicedo, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, Trevoh Chalobah, and Carney Chukwuemeka have also had minor issues.
Gareth Southgate will not have an experienced left-back available for the next two international breaks due to Chilwell’s injury setback. Luke Shaw, a star for Manchester United, has been sidelined since August due to a muscle injury.

Last month, England defeated Scotland by a score of 3-1, with Kieran Trippier filling in at left back. Southgate may need to employ a similar strategy when England faces Australia and Italy later this month.

Shaw’s return date is still unknown, but he could rejoin Manchester United in November, when England faces Malta and North Macedonia. England are six points clear at the top of Group C after five games, and a victory over Italy on October 17 will be sufficient for them to qualify for the European Championships next summer.

If England loses to Italy, they will have to wait until November to be assured of a spot at Euro 2024. After missing the 2022 World Cup due to injury, Chilwell will be hoping his injury woes improve by next year.

James, a teammate from Chelsea, joined him on the sidelines for the tournament, and Chilwell admitted that the two helped each other through the difficult period. Chilwell remarked, “Strangely, it was nice to have each other during that time because we could share the disappointment of missing the World Cup.”
