Chelsea will profit from Romelu Lukaku’s Champions League horror, as Inter makes a decision.

Romelu Lukaku was unable to score in the Champions League final against Manchester City on Saturday night.

Inter Milan wants to keep the player on loan. Despite his Champions League final blunder, Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku will play at the San Siro next season. Lukaku was left wondering what may have been after directing a late free header, which could have forced extra time, straight at Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.

He also managed to clumsily block a goal-bound header from Federico Dimarco, but despite his off-field escapades, Inter want to keep the 30-year-old. “Romelu loves Inter, that’s very clear,” owner Steven Zhang remarked.

He’s a great guy but he’s under contract at Chelsea. We have to wait and speak to Chelsea to make Lukaku’s future clear.” It was the sort of performance which might have persuaded new Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino Inter are welcome to his services.

Lautaro Martinez, Lukaku’s attack partner, was perplexed by the striker’s performance in front of goal. “Not even Ederson knows how he managed to save Lukaku’s header,” Martinez remarked later.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea would demand a fee for Lukaku this summer if they decide to split ways with the ex-Manchester United attacker, or whether they will try to strike a deal that will allow them to bring in new players. Pochettino is eager to sign Martinez in the coming months, despite interest from Real Madrid, and both teams may explore a straight swap deal.

The Blues are also anxious to acquire a top-tier goalkeeper this summer, with Edouard Mendy slated to leave and Kepa Arrizabalaga expected to stay but as a backup. Inter’s Andre Onana has been talked internally by Chelsea, and a prospective move has been discussed by Inter representatives, with the ex-Ajax goalkeeper saying that he will follow his club’s instructions and is open to staying or leaving. United and Tottenham have both been linked with the 27-year-old.
