Chelsea’s Mykhaylo Mudryk faces ridicule for poor performance and early substitution against England

On Sunday night, Mykhaylo Mudryk was taken off the court against England.

Mykhaylo Mudryk of Chelsea has been chastised for his underwhelming performance for Ukraine against England on Sunday. The winger was taken off in the 61st minute at Wembley after failing to make an impact against Manchester City’s Kyle Walker.

Mudryk joined Chelsea for a fee of £89 million in the January transfer window, but he has struggled to justify his price tag at Stamford Bridge since the big-money switch. When called upon, the 22-year-old has shown energy and pace, but his final product has raised questions, prompting Graham Potter to drop the forward in favor of more experienced players like Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic.

Mudryk is expected to be given plenty of time after signing an eight-and-a-half-year contract with the Blues. However, the former Shakhtar Donetsk star failed to excite Chelsea fans during Ukraine’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of England on Sunday.

After just over an hour against the Three Lions, manager Ruslan Rotan decided to replace the forward with Girona star Viktor Tsigankov, prompting widespread mockery. “Mudryk is genuinely woeful, what a waste of money,” one Blues fan wrote on Twitter.

Another added: “All jokes aside, how on earth did Shakhtar get 100m (euros) for Mudryk.” Another asked: “Did Mudryk actually touch the ball without losing it? Absolutely awful from him.”

However, many Chelsea fans defended their No. 15, claiming that the prospect was signed for such a high fee because of how good he could become, rather than because he was already the finished article.

Andriy Shevchenko, a Ukrainian hero, believes Mudryk will be a success at his former club, believing the player made the right decision in joining Chelsea despite interest from Arsenal in January.

“He’s just getting started in a massive football career,” he told the Blues’ official website. Coming to Chelsea was the right first step for him. He’s a part of a big project. He’s in capable hands.

“The decision to get him right now was down to how much the club believe in his talent. He’s on a very long contract, that’s very unusual. Chelsea are investing in their future. The Premier League usually demands results right now, but let’s see how he does in these eight years. Let’s see what he can do in the long term. The club must be patient with him, believe in his talent.”
