Chelsea’s stance on Mason Mount’s contract extension comes amid a major stumbling block in the Champions League.

Mason Mount’s future at Chelsea appears to be resolved in the summer, with many Premier League clubs monitoring his contract status.

Chelsea will be hoping that despite multiple twists and turns in recent months, they are still in control of the Mason Mount contract situation. The Blues midfielder’s current contract expires in 18 months, and talks about an extension have been ongoing since before the World Cup.

Discussions were originally scheduled for November, but were quickly shifted to January, and are now scheduled for the summer. Mount faces a crucial few months at Stamford Bridge to prove he is worthy of his wage demands, with a clear schism between the two parties regarding an extension being negotiated.

Graham Potter was asked about Mount’s contract situation during his pre-Tottenham press conference, but the Chelsea manager declined to answer.

“It’s always complicated, there is always negotiation,” Potter explained on Friday. “It’s best I leave it between Mason and the club, that is the best way for that to be dealt with as far as I’m concerned. He’s been fantastic to work with, an important player for us, and of course, I hope it gets resolved quickly.”

Given that he is a full England international and a Champions League winner, it is understandable that several teams have expressed a real interest in taking advantage of the stalled talks. Liverpool, Manchester United, and Manchester City are all keeping an eye on the situation, yet an update from Ben Jacobs suggests that the Cobham graduate will remain in west London.

Mason Mount is another midfielder to watch, Liverpool’s interest is genuine,” Jacobs said on CaughtOffside. “Chelsea still feel they have the situation in their control as they look to extend Mount’s contract.

“Chelsea’s owners want Mount to commit to a long-term deal that’s quite incentive-driven and has a reduction in wage if the club don’t reach the Champions League in any given season. Mount loves Chelsea but with a massive squad, and his game time diminishing a little, he could be tempted away.”
