Cody Gakpo has explained what Jurgen Klopp said to his Liverpool players after their 4-1 loss to Manchester City last weekend.

Despite leading at the Etihad Stadium, the Reds were thoroughly defeated.

The scoreline reflected both City’s dominance on the day and the current gap in class between last season’s title rivals.

A depressing day for all Liverpool fans.

Without a doubt.

And, speaking to The Athletic yesterday, Gakpo revealed that Klopp had admitted as much.

The Dutch forward stated that the manager stressed the importance of his players sticking together during such difficult times.

“The message from the manager [at the Etihad] was that we had to stick together, that we had to keep going,” Gakpo said following Tuesday’s draw with Chelsea.

“Everyone knows it’s been a difficult time, but if we all stick together, I know things will turn around for us.”

“Getting that point [against Chelsea] has to be viewed as a small step in the right direction.”

Obviously, we wanted to win, but in the end, it’s something to build on.”

Liverpool’s deserts have a family feel to them.

That’s all well and good.

Liverpool’s manager talks about sticking together, but we need to see some proof that his team is paying attention.

They don’t appear to be a group that believes in each other right now.

And, as Jordan Henderson’s altercation with Alisson on Tuesday demonstrated, this isn’t the team it once was.

At their peak, Klopp’s Liverpool were more like a family than a team.

All of the players seemed at ease in each other’s company, and it showed on the field.

That family atmosphere has recently vanished.

The players no longer appear to have been playing together for the years that they have.

Or, rather, they do, but in the sense that things have become stale.

They appear to have been together for a little too long.

There’s no easy way for Jurgen to re-create that sense of community.

Obviously, the best way to do so is to win on the field.

But, as Liverpool has repeatedly demonstrated, that is easier said than done.

Gakpo, as a new player, must be wondering what he’s gotten himself into.

However, if the Reds are to regain their mojo between now and the end of May, it is critical that both old and new players get back on track.

The 23-year-old appears to be receptive to that message.

It’s now up to some of his teammates to follow suit.
