Manchester United Targets Striker and Centre Back in January, Says David Ornstein

David Ornstein revealed that Manchester United is targeting a right-sided center-back and a striker in the January transfer window, according to reports.
United, along with manager Erik ten Hag, aims to reinforce these crucial positions in the squad.
However, there is a realization, likely unwelcome for supporters, that despite a desire to conduct business, the indications suggest it needs to be low-cost, on loan, or facilitated by player exits.
This uncertainty stems from the fact that INEOS’ 25% takeover is still pending approval, and even when approved, there is an estimated six-to-eight-week wait for the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test.

During this period, INEOS would have the power to influence sporting control but not execute it, meaning complete sporting control might only be achieved in the summer window under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s group.
United’s spending limitations are also tied to Financial Fair Play, particularly after significant expenditures in the last two summer windows.
Nevertheless, Ornstein notes that the club could consider severing ties with players in the winter to create space.
The Athletic suggests that United’s French players, especially Anthony Martial, could be sold to free up financial and squad space, particularly for strengthening Erik ten Hag’s attacking options. A similar scenario applies in defense if Raphael Varane departs.
With Tottenham pursuing Jean-Clair Todibo, whom Ten Hag values, United may need to act in January to secure the defender’s services, potentially requiring Varane’s sale despite potential backlash.

Martial has long been considered expendable, and his sale could bring in much-needed income for the club.

Fabrizio Romano recently stated that United has engaged with the representatives of Donyell Malen and other strikers like Timo Werner and Serhou Guirassy.
Finally, the issue of Jadon Sancho must be addressed, with reports suggesting that if the winger is not reintegrated, United urgently needs to raise money for him.
There are discussions about terminating his contract, though this would be costly and likely a last resort.
While fans may dream of a winter market where funds are generated and significant players are brought in, past experiences caution against getting too excited just yet.
