Edu Considers Repeat of Successful Arsenal Transfers with Zinchenko and Jesus, Eyeing Barcelona Move

The Gunners have benefited from recruiting former Manchester City players in recent transfer windows and could do so again.

Arsenal’s transfer strategy over the last few years, led by Edu Gaspar, has propelled the club back to the pinnacle of English football. Mikel Arteta’s squad is well-stocked in every position, with the majority of the squad acquired through the sporting director.

The Gunners’ current squad was carefully assembled over the last few years as part of Arteta and Edu’s overhaul of the club. For the most part, the market has been exquisite from Thomas Partey in 2020 to Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale in 2021.

However, the double signing of Oleksandr Zinchenko (£32m) and Gabriel Jesus (£45m) from Manchester City is arguably one of the smartest pieces of business completed in recent times. Arsenal’s stunning season has been aided by the duo, with no Premier League lineup this season that did not include at least one of them.

Historically, Man City has used their financial clout to acquire Arsenal’s prized assets. Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri, Emmanuel Adebayor, Bacary Sagna, and Kolo Toure all left Arsenal for Manchester United, and all but one won the Premier League.

However, Arsenal may be planning another move for an ex-City player in Eric Garcia. The centre-back is currently playing for Barcelona after joining on a free transfer in 2021.

Garcia, described as a “top player” by Pep Guardiola, has made 57 appearances for Barcelona but has struggled to get regular starts for Xavi this season. Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde have been preferred more frequently, and his position has now been called into question.

According to reports in Spain, the Spanish giants have agreed to sign Athletic Bilbao left-footed centre-back Inigo Martinez on a free transfer at the end of the season, which means Garcia’s services could be available.

The Gunners are keen on signing Garcia in the summer after expressing interest in the January transfer window, according to the Daily Mail. According to the report, the 22-year-old turned down their offer before Jakub Kiwior was signed.

Garcia previously worked with Arsenal manager Arteta at Manchester City. After turning down a new contract with City, there was rumored interest ahead of the January 2021 transfer window.

Arsenal has plenty of options in Garcia’s position. With Rob Holding and Kiwior as deputies, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have formed one of Europe’s strongest partnerships.
