Erik ten Hag delivers a devastating statement about David de Gea’s future at Manchester United.

David de Gea’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain, and he might yet leave after his contract next month, according to Erik ten Hag, who sent him a simple message.

Even if David de Gea signs a new deal, Erik ten Hag has reluctant to affirm that he will remain his number one goalkeeper.

De Gea’s contract expires next month, but Ten Hag says that he wants the Spaniard to stay and that the 32-year-old wants to sign a new contract. If he puts pen to paper, he could start a goalkeeping merry-go-round.

If De Gea stays, it is expected that Dean Henderson will be permitted to join Nottingham Forest on a permanent basis. Meanwhile, the Red Devils could bolster their goalkeeping options, with both Brentford’s David Raya and Porto’s Diogo Costa linked with moves.

While Ten Hag has a number of options to make regarding who he selects between the sticks, he has already told De Gea that he will not be an automatic pick next season. “I will not say he [De Gea] will always be my No.1 because in a club like Manchester United, there must be competition in all positions,” he told The Times.

“You can’t do it with 11 players. It is impossible. You need double positions.”

De Gea, of course, comes into next season fresh off a solid season at Old Trafford. The Spaniard appeared in 57 games for the Red Devils.

His 17 Premier League clean sheets were also enough to earn him the Golden Glove for the second time in his career. Meanwhile, De Gea ended his dreadful penalty record by saving a penalty at Old Trafford for the first time in nine years in the Red Devils’ final-day victory over Fulham.

But Ten Hag has cautioned De Gea that if he wants to preserve his position, he must improve his footwork. “It’s not what I want [top footwork], it’s more what top football demands nowadays,” Ten Hag stated in response to a query about what a modern goalkeeper needs.

“If you observe teams, you have to be capable of playing from the back and use your keeper as a plus one. Otherwise it’s simple for opponents to put you under pressure.

“He [De Gea] had to step up. In a number of games, he showed progression.”

Brentford goalkeeper Raya is one player who has already demonstrated his ability with the ball at his feet. Thomas Frank, the Bees’ manager, has indicated that he may quit West London due to interest from Manchester United.

“I think we only have one player for sale,” he stated following Brentford’s final day of the season against Manchester City. That’s the one that’s been a lot of conversation, David. I guess I stated he was £40 million.”
