Erik ten Hag Explains the Reason Behind Overlooked Man Utd Summer Signing’s Absence from Debut

Erik ten Hag has explained why one of his new goalkeepers has not yet made his Manchester United debut, as Andre Onana has started every match in all competitions this season. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted that he is “very happy” with summer signing Altay Bayindir despite not playing him against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup.

Last season, Ten Hag decided to use Martin Dubravka against Aston Villa and Burnley in the third and fourth rounds of the same competition, while Tom Heaton was used for the quarterfinal victory. United went on to win the Carabao Cup, defeating Newcastle 2-0 with David de Gea in goal.
But, for the third round of the 2023-24 tournament against Palace last Tuesday, Ten Hag chose to stick with first-choice Andre Onana, rather than playing Bayindir. The Turkey international has not yet played for the Red Devils since his transfer from Fenerbahce on the transfer deadline.

A Turkish journalist questioned Ten Hag prior to Tuesday’s Champions League match against Galatasaray as to why Bayindir did not start over Onana. Ten Hag explained that the decision to play Andre against Crystal Palace in the League Cup was based on the fact that both Bayindir and Andre are new to the club and must adjust to the English standard. “Therefore, we favored Andre to play in that game.

“It’s important for him to use every game in this moment, but yeah, we also have to progress Altay, that’s clear. He makes a very good impression in training, he’s really developing, progressing. So we’re very happy with that and we are convinced we have the two right goalkeepers in our squad to do the job for us.”
Ten Hag decided to acquire Onana from Inter Milan after De Gea’s departure in the summer, adding Bayindir and Heaton to round out United’s goalkeeping staff. Onana’s start at Old Trafford has been shaky, but he has conceded just once in his last three games.

United will host Galatasaray in their first Champions League home game of the season on Tuesday, following a 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich last month. “We know that [Galatasaray’s quality], it’s not just Zaha and Icardi, but Mertens and Ziyech as well, so they have a lot more and it’s about the team,” Ten Hag said. “We have to defend that and have to be at our best to get the right result.”
