Erik ten Hag sends Mason Mount a defiant message after Manchester United’s poor start.
The 24-year-old’s debut with Manchester United has been lackluster and hampered by injury, but Ten Hag remains optimistic that he will play a significant role this season.
Despite a slow start, Erik ten Hag insists Mason Mount can “be a big part” of his Manchester United squad.

Mount was acquired from Chelsea for £55 million at the beginning of July to address Ten Hag’s need for more energy and technical quality in central midfield. The 24-year-old has appeared five times in all competitions, but he has been unable to replicate his form at Stamford Bridge.

Mount has yet to find a rhythm with his new midfield teammates due to an injury he suffered in August during United’s 2-0 loss at Tottenham, and he has squandered a number of opportunities. However, there have been flashes of the England international’s talent, and Ten Hag is optimistic about his future role.

Ten Hag stated on United’s website, “He can play a major role in [what we are creating here].” “He can contribute to the game by supplying, establishing connections, and establishing link-ups for those in the front line. “He possesses the ability to provide [energy] and to supply our front players through combinations. Also in his moments of defense transition, defending, and pressing, he can be a great player for us, and he already is because he puts in a great deal of effort. When we improve our team’s connections, this will increase.”

Mount has struggled as part of a larger team dysfunction as Ten Hag has overseen his team’s worst start to a season in 39 years. Midfield in particular has been a source of concern, with Casemiro unable to match his stellar performances from last season.

Bruno Fernandes has also been uncharacteristically poor in attack, with United’s goal-scoring woes continuing. Tuesday’s match against Galatasaray should have resulted in a goal for Mount, who has squandered multiple opportunities.

He is expected to start again this afternoon when United hosts Brentford. Ten Hag was unable to get Sergio Reguilon back in time for the game and may be forced to use Sofyan Amrabat at left-back once more.
