Liverpool have launched an approach for Sporting CP center defender Goncalo Inacio, who is also thought to be on Manchester United’s radar for the summer transfer window.

Liverpool have made a bid for Sporting CP central defender Goncalo Inacio, who Manchester United had identified as a possible replacement for Harry Maguire.

United’s interest comes as club captain Maguire, 30, has had a rough season after losing his starting berth under Erik ten Hag and is poised to depart Old Trafford at the conclusion of the season in search of regular action elsewhere.

United’s regular central defensive partnership is Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, with Victor Lindelof also an option in the position, while left-back Luke Shaw has also been used in the center of the backline in recent weeks – with Maguire dropping to fifth choice.

Liverpool’s center defenders are Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomez, although the club may try to freshen things up this summer after a poor season in which the team finished trophyless.

According to Le Parisien, the Reds are the English club that is pushing the hardest to sign Inacio, who is currently with the Portugal national team, and have filed an enquiry for him. Another team said to be interested in the player is Paris Saint-Germain.

Earlier this week, O Jogo stated, as cited by Sport Witness, that Miguel Pinho, the agent of Bruno Fernandes, might be crucial in United’s pursuit of another defender, with Maguire certain to move in the summer window because Inacio is his client.

Maguire had previously stated that he wanted to stay with the club and was determined to reclaim his starting spot under Ten Hag. However, it is understood that United are considering bids for the club captain as they strive to be brutal with ongoing roster changes.

Inacio, 21, has made 115 first-team appearances for the Lisbon giants and is well-liked within the club. Sporting has a long history of developing young players before selling them at high rates, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Nani to Manchester United in recent years.

United will prioritize signing a center striker and a goalkeeper this summer, but more defensive reinforcements are also expected. Ten Hag is interested in Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong.
