Man United manager Erik ten Hag hoped that his team’s goal-scoring ability would improve after their first victory over Everton in October, but he is still waiting.

Much has changed between Manchester United’s victory over Everton at Goodison Park and the present day.

It’s hard to believe that Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th career league goal in a 2-1 victory just six months ago. One month later, he’d be gone as the club demonstrated its faith in Erik ten Hag.

Nobody expected Wout Weghorst to be in contention to play for the Reds against Manchester United in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford. Despite all of these changes, one thing remains constant.

Following the defeat of the Toffees, Ten Hag outlined the next step for his Reds as they sought to advance. “The ball can always come in,” he said, “but we should have scored for a third and then it was game over.”

“We had many more spaces on the attacking transition that we didn’t use, and that’s the next step we need to take.” Of course, I’m pleased with the outcome. They’re tough to score against, but we got two or three, so that’s good.”

While the Dutchman was diplomatic in his criticism of his team’s lack of a cutting edge at the time, he must have hoped that things would be better by Easter Saturday.

Unfortunately, as Wednesday night demonstrated, United’s goalkeeping continues to irritate. The Reds had 18 shots against Brentford, but only three were on David Raya.

The Reds only mustered six shots in total at Newcastle, as the Magpies ran away with a well-deserved victory. Throughout the season, this has been a recurring theme.

A +5 goal difference after 28 games could seriously jeopardize the Reds’ chances of finishing in the top four, especially given the tight race for the final two Champions League spots. It’s no surprise that Ten Hag has made finding a striker his top priority this summer.

United have shown little sign of being able to take the next step that the Dutchman outlined at Goodison Park, but the Reds are still in the running thanks to a significant defensive improvement. Ten Hag will be more optimistic than pessimistic that his team will be able to address their offensive woes on Saturday.
