When compared to the sweeping changes made upon his arrival, Erik ten Hag may not need as much ink to draw down his Manchester United shopping list this summer.

After the club finished sixth in the Premier League last season, the Dutchman was sworn in and has already won his first title. He did it with four new signings in his Wembley starting XI: Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Antony and Wout Weghorst.

Christian Eriksen was ruled out of the Carabao Cup final due to injury, while Tyrell Malacia sat on the bench as Marcel Sabitzer had a 20-minute cameo. Ten Hag and key officials behind the scenes have approved nine deals in his first two windows in charge.

When it comes to incomings, next summer will not be quite as busy. Nevertheless, there is one vital item to attend to – the search for a new striker – and the former Ajax manager has already planned what he would require from the player brought in to replace Cristiano Ronaldo on a long-term basis.

Ten Hag put his complete trust in Anthony Martial at the start of the season, but four different injury setbacks have restricted what he could have brought to this exciting squad. Meanwhile, January arrival Weghorst does so much positive work in the build-up without providing a dependable goal threat, at least at this level.

The key targets for United and their manager, Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane, have obviously done well this season and throughout their careers. Both men will be expensive if United entice them to Old Trafford, but what would they need to contribute to warrant a £100 million-plus outlay?

Manager Ten Hag told the Manchester Evening News and other British outlets about Martial at a warm-weather training camp in Spain: “We’ve seen that when he’s available, he has a huge impact on our game. He has 350 minutes, four goals, and two assists, which is an excellent performance.

“In parts of his game, like pressing, he is doing a really good job for the team linking-up the play. For our team, he is a really important player and we need that profile.”

Goals have been more difficult to come by for Weghorst, who did make his impact with an assist for Marcus Rashford at Wembley, but his profile differs from that of Martial, and the latter himself when the reinvigorated England striker has led United’s line. Aside from their pre-programmed proclivity to score goals by the bucket load, Osimhen and Kane would provide opposing characteristics.

Ten Hag added to his praise for Weghorst’s influence since switching loans: “He is the one who inspires the other players around him to perform better. We need to work harder as a team to anticipate his movements, because his movements are good and he was close to scoring a lot of times.

“He had many good actions and already a lot of good contributions to our results. He will score [goals], but in the meantime he will do the other stuff, and do it good.”

Osimhen or Kane would (almost) guarantee goals to relieve Rashford’s load next season. Ten Hag, on the other hand, will demand the missing piece to his assaulting jigsaw puzzle.

Everybody walks through the door at Old Trafford has already been assigned a task.
