Fabrizio Romano Confirms Arsenal’s Interest in Joao Cancelo: Initial Contact Made for Potential Deal

Cancelo, 29, has had a rough season, spending time away from the Etihad after Pep Guardiola judged him surplus to needs.

Cancelo was loaned to German powerhouse Bayern Munich for the remainder of the season after losing his place in City’s starting lineup.

On the last day, he helped Bayern win their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title at the cost of Borussia Dortmund, but he is unlikely to stay at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern has the option to extend Cancelo’s loan deal for £61 million, but The Mirror reported in March that the Bavarian club had decided not to do so.

Cancelo’s future is currently uncertain, with City well-stocked at both left and right back.

This season, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji have impressed in hybrid wide center-back duties on City’s left side, while Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis give Guardiola with options on the right.

As a result, City may try to offload Cancelo this summer.

Arsenal ‘make contact’ over Cancelo deal

Runners-up in the Premier League Arsenal and La Liga champions Barcelona have both been linked with a deal for Cancelo this summer.

The Gunners have made contact with transfer specialist Romano about a prospective deal for the Portugal international.

“They are interested in Cancelo,” he told GiveMeSport. They had some touch with these agents, and they have a really excellent relationship with them.

“There was some discussion about the possibility of signing Cancelo.”

It remains to be seen whether City will be willing to sell to rivals Arsenal, having already allowed Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to leave.

Those two transfers helped transform Arsenal into serious championship challengers, and earlier this season, sources stated that City had implemented a new rule prohibiting the sale of any more of its players to the Gunners.

What did Cancelo say?

Cancelo denied having a falling out with Guardiola prior to joining Bayern in February.

“As I already said, he [Guardiola] found a way to play, after the World Cup, in which he started playing with a full-back more inside, where I also played, and he liked what he saw with Rico and Nathan,” he said.

“I respected his decision because I have to and this is a team of great footballers.

“But I think a player is always a bit selfish. Any player wants to feel important, wants to play and anyone who says otherwise is lying. A competitive player, like me, who aspires to win titles, just wants to play.

“It’s like Pep said, I need to play to be happy. It’s not a question of devaluing my teammates, because others are on the bench to play. But I thought I deserved to play and he didn’t.”When asked about his future plans, Cancelo said he wasn’t sure what would happen this summer.

“Bayern have a purchase option, I don’t know if they will exercise it or not, but while I’m here I’ll do my best,” he added.
