Fabrizio Romano Confirms Imminent Agreement with Successor to Julian Ward

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are close to hiring a new sporting director ahead of the summer transfer season.

Julian Ward, the Reds’ current sporting director, revealed in November that he would leave at the end of the season, barely months after officially succeeding Michael Edwards.

Ward has since agreed to take on a similar job at Ajax to assist the Dutch giants in their rebuilding efforts following the departures of manager Erik ten Hag and several key players last summer.

Meanwhile, Liverpool has been looking for a replacement for the 41-year-old. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp stated at the end of April that, while he had not been involved in the club’s hunt for Ward’s replacement, the search was “going in the right direction.”

“I am not involved in the talks,” Klopp explained at the time. “Perhaps there are discussions going on, but I am not the person in the club who can give a true answer on where things stand.”That is in the hands of others, but from what I’ve heard, everything is moving in the right direction.”

And, if sources are to be believed, Liverpool will soon unveil Ward’s replacement.

Jorg Schmadtke has been appointed as Liverpool’s new sporting director.

Liverpool are “close” to appointing Jorg Schmadtke as their next sporting director, according to Romano.

Schmadtke was a goalkeeper before transitioning into football management.

Indeed, the German recently served as Wolfsburg’s managing director of sport for five years until departing at the beginning of February.

“Liverpool are now close to appointing Jorg Schmadtke as [their] new sport director,” Romano tweeted. He has accepted the post, thus the deal is imminent.

“[The] former Wolfsburg director will collaborate on the project/new signings with Jurgen Klopp, who will continue to play an important role in the transfer strategy.”

After a disappointing season, Liverpool are expected to be active in the summer transfer market.
