Four Arsenal Players Who Disappointed in Europa League Loss to Sporting Lisbon

Four players failed Mikel Arteta and contributed to Arsenal’s elimination by Sporting Lisbon during Thursday’s Europa League match.

On Thursday night, Arsenal suffered a disappointing exit from the Europa League at the hands of Sporting Lisbon, which shattered Mikel Arteta’s hopes of achieving a double. Despite aiming to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament, Arsenal failed to achieve their goal, and Ruben Armorim’s team stunned the home crowd with an unexpected victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Granit Xhaka

After Granit Xhaka’s 19th-minute goal put Arsenal in the lead against Sporting, the momentum shifted in the opposite direction. Pedro Goncalves equalized for Sporting with an impressive shot, taking advantage of Aaron Ramsdale’s advanced position. The match eventually went to a penalty shootout, in which Gabriel Martinelli missed his attempt, leading to wild celebrations from the Sporting fans. In light of Arsenal’s defeat, Express Sport has identified four players who underperformed during the game.

Fabio Vieira

Fabio Vieira started the match brightly, seeming to relish the negative attention he received from Sporting’s away fans. However, his impact on the game dwindled significantly, and he was ultimately substituted in the 101st minute for Martin Odegaard. Although Vieira possesses talent, his inconsistency is a significant issue, especially for a team like Arsenal, which aims to win major titles. It is no coincidence that Arsenal’s performance improved following Odegaard’s introduction, as he has arguably been their best player this season. Vieira must improve his performances significantly to secure a regular starting spot in the team going forward.

Aaron Ramsdale

Aaron Ramsdale has generally performed well for Arsenal this season, but in the match against Sporting Lisbon, his decision to play high up the field as a goalkeeper proved to be a mistake. He was slow to react to Pedro Gonclaves’ impressive lob, lacking speed and decisiveness in his attempt to prevent the ball from finding the back of the net. Although Ramsdale made an impressive save towards the end of the game, forcing extra time, he was unable to save any of Sporting’s penalties during the shootout. Additionally, he could have done better with two of the penalties that he faced.

Gabriel Martinelli

It would be unfair to criticize Gabriel Martinelli too harshly. The Arsenal player was a persistent threat throughout the match and demonstrated courage by stepping up in the penalty shootout. Nevertheless, it was his missed penalty that ultimately led to Arsenal’s elimination from the Europa League. However, Martinelli will have a chance to redeem himself in the upcoming match against Crystal Palace on Sunday, and we anticipate him to bounce back with another impressive performance on the left side of Arteta’s attack.
