Frank Lampard Reveals Insight into Chelsea Star’s Struggles: ‘He Feels It

Frank Lampard, who praised Thiago Silva’s application and approach this season, has explained why the Chelsea defender has struggled this season.

Silva, who will turn 39 in September, will begin his fourth season with Chelsea after signing a one-year contract extension in February.

He has been a constant for Chelsea since his free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2020, when he arrived during Lampard’s first managerial term at Stamford Bridge.

During his tenure at Chelsea, the Brazil international has won the Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup, while also proving to be a leader and mentor to his colleagues, particularly the younger ones.

Silva and Chelsea have had a rough 2022/23 season, with the centre-back criticizing the owners and offering them advise ahead of the summer on how to avoid a repeat of the disastrous season.

He told reporters last month: “I think the first step has been made, an incorrect step, but it has been made. We can’t be blaming the managers if we don’t take responsibility. It’s a hard period for the club, with a lot of indecision.

“Change of ownership, new players arriving – we had to increase the size of the changing room because it didn’t fit the size of the squad.

A plus point is that there are some fantastic players in the roster, but there will always be guys who are dissatisfied. Because not everyone can play, there will always be someone who is disappointed. It’s difficult for the manager to select 11 players from a roster of 30 or more.

“Some can’t make the squad, we signed eight in January, we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.”

Chelsea are presently 11th in the Premier League after a 3-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, snapping a record of six consecutive defeats.

It was a welcome respite from the building pressure on the team, as frustrations mounted with only four games remaining before the season ended.

Lampard, the caretaker manager, was full of admiration for the 38-year-old down on the south coast and revealed why Silva has been suffering as a result of this season’s poor series of results.

“Some can’t make the squad, we signed eight in January, we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.”
