How could Manchester United line up with Mason Mount?
Manchester United is planning a third bid for Mason Mount, which could be worth up to £60 million. Here’s how Erik ten Hag might use Chelsea’s midfielder.
Mason Mount could end up at Manchester United at the end of the summer transfer season.
The Red Devils have been pursuing the midfielder for a few weeks now, but two previous offers have fell short of Chelsea’s asking price.
However, 90min hears that Manchester United will make a third bid for Mount. This new offer will include a price that might reach £60 million, and there is hope that an agreement could be reached soon.
Erik ten Hag has long admired Mount since their days in the Dutch Eredivisie, and the two could soon meet at Old Trafford.
Here’s how Mount could be used if he joins Manchester United.
Mount resembles current Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen, who spent much of his first season at Old Trafford with Casemiro.
Eriksen needed some time to adjust to this deeper role – notably, he was pickpocketed for the second goal in Man Utd’s 4-0 loss at Brentford on the second weekend of the 2022/23 season – but he quickly adapted and became a crucial cog in Ten Hag’s engine.
If Mount starts, it’s possible he’s considered as a long-term replacement for 31-year-old Eriksen, who appeared to be on his last legs at the end of the season.
Again, Mount will need time to adjust to life in the Premier League because he hasn’t played at this level before, but with Casemiro by his side, the task should be easier.
Casemiro – Mount
McTominay – Mount
This is the first of two parts that will explain how Mount and Bruno Fernandes can coexist.
Mount’s natural position is number 10, which he shares with Manchester United’s star player, Andres Fernandes.
Last season, Ten Hag shifted the Portugal international out to the flank in order to make room for someone else, generally Wout Weghorst or Marcel Sabitzer.
Mount is an upgrade over both of those possibilities, so it’s probable he’ll get to play his favorite role in Manchester.
Potential lineups:
Fernandes – Mount – Rashford
Fernandes – Mount – Sancho
Antony – Mount – Fernandes
Mount, like Fernandes, has experience as a wide playmaker coming in from the channels.
If Ten Hag prefers to maintain Fernandes in the middle, Mount would be an excellent choice to play on the wing.
Mount’s ability to play on the right side of the field, in fact, could alleviate their problems in that position following Antony’s dismal rookie season and Jadon Sancho’s persistent lack of growth.
Possible lineups:
Rashford – Mount – Fernandes
Sancho – Fernandes – Mount
Mount Antony – Fernandes
