Interpreting Thiago Alcantara’s Injury Woes: Insights Into Liverpool’s Understanding of the £25M Signing
Liverpool has faced an eight-month absence of Thiago Alcantara as he recovers from a hip injury. According to a football injury expert, Liverpool was aware of the risks associated with signing Thiago in 2020.

The Reds have been unable to field Thiago since April due to the sustained hip injury, leading to surgery.

Jurgen Klopp remains hopeful of Thiago’s return in the New Year, offering a potential boost to Liverpool’s Premier League campaign.
Klopp provided an update, expressing ongoing uncertainty about Thiago’s recovery timeline. Fans express frustration over Thiago’s injury record, having made over 30 appearances in only one of his three seasons with the Reds.

Injury expert Ben Dinnery explains that Liverpool understood the likelihood of such issues, given Thiago’s history as a one-in-two game player, playing around 50 or 51 percent of all league minutes.

Dinnery delves into the reasons behind Thiago’s prolonged absence, citing the complexities of the recovery process and the move away from set recovery guidelines.
He emphasizes the need for activity-based programs and the challenges players face as the demand and physicality increase.

Liverpool currently faces additional absences, including Andy Robertson, Stefan Bajcetic, Joel Matip, Diogo Jota, and Alexis Mac Allister. Dinnery attributes the surge in injuries to post-pandemic effects, disrupted pre-seasons, winter World Cups, and a European Championship, creating a “perfect storm” of contributing factors.

The stop-start nature of VAR and increased match time are also considered factors, with injuries rising by 30 percent compared to last year, particularly hamstring injuries, which have increased by 95 percent for the season average.
