Joao Cancelo of Manchester City has admitted that he hopes Thomas Tuchel will be the man to help him win the Champions League and knock out his parent club.

Bayern Munich has acted spectacularly this week, with reliable reports indicating that current head coach Julian Nagelsmann will be fired with immediate effect.

The Bundesliga giants have also lined up a replacement, with former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel reportedly agreeing to a two-and-a-half year contract at the Allianz Arena, which could be signed this week.

Manchester City fans have been especially interested in developments, as their team will face the Munich club in the last-eight of the UEFA Champions League, in a two-leg match scheduled for next month.

Now, speaking after Portugal’s 4-0 win over Liechtenstein in a qualifying match for the 2024 European Championships, Joao Cancelo has become the first Bayern Munich player to be questioned about the flurry of reports that have surfaced throughout the evening.

When informed of the impending dismissal of his current manager, Julian Nagelsmann, the on-loan Manchester City defender said, “I didn’t know! I had no idea! Yes, I’m a little surprised.

“I want to thank Mr (Julian) Nagelsmann because he was the one who wanted me at Bayern (Munich). It was the management that wanted me. This caught me by surprise, but all the luck in the world to him.”

Cancelo continued by welcoming the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as his next coach, stating that he hopes the German manager will be the man to win him his first Champions League title and, in the process, knock out his parent club Manchester City.

“As for (Thomas) Tuchel, he made me lose a Champions League final, so I hope he will win it for me this year,” admitted Joao Cancelo.

The 28-year-old is currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Manchester City, having left the Etihad Stadium on a six-month loan deal in January, with the German giants holding an option to buy the Portugal international for €70 million.

In the aftermath of the UEFA Champions League, City sources confirmed that Cancelo would be eligible to face his parent club in the competition, with no clause preventing that possibility inserted in the January agreement.
