Jurgen Klopp to Reunite with VAR Official Criticized Previously as Referee Named for Liverpool vs Newcastle
Anthony Taylor has been selected as the referee for Liverpool’s New Year’s Day match against Newcastle United.

The upcoming clash is a chance for Liverpool to secure a domestic double over Newcastle after their previous dramatic win in August.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be facing a Newcastle team that has experienced a dip in form, with two consecutive defeats against Luton Town and Nottingham Forest.

Anthony Taylor, a 45-year-old referee, has officiated 56 Liverpool matches in his professional career, the most among his assignments, with 31 wins and nine losses for Liverpool in those games.

This season, Liverpool has drawn both games that Taylor has refereed, including the opening day clash with Chelsea and the match against Brighton & Hove Albion in October.

This will be Taylor’s 33rd involvement in matches featuring Newcastle, and it will be the second time he officiates a Liverpool-Newcastle encounter.

In a match in February 2023, he sent off Nick Pope, and Liverpool won 2-0 at St James’ Park.
While Taylor will be assisted by Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn on the field, attention may also turn to VAR officials at Stockley Park.

Liverpool has recently faced contentious VAR decisions in matches against Arsenal and Burnley, with decisions going against them.

Stuart Attwell, who was previously criticized by Jurgen Klopp, will serve as the Video Assistant Referee for this match, with Mark Scholes as his assistant.
