Liverpool have a five-man shortlist for their next signing as Jorg Schmadtke seeks his first contract.

In the summer window, Liverpool are attempting to sign numerous new players for Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool have five midfielders on their shortlist as new transfer manager Jorg Schmadtke seeks his first signing at Anfield. Alexis MacAllister joined the Reds in their first move, but the Argentine’s arrival has been in the works for a long time and was the final of Julian Ward’s rule before Schmadtke took over.

Further midfield arrivals are expected as Klopp tries to revamp the midfield to fully adopt his new system, which has seen Trent Alexander-Arnold flip from right-back. Although interest in Manu Kone and Khephren Thuram has been well documented, Liverpool have been expected to compete with Newcastle for Gabri Veiga.

Liverpool have held conversations with Veiga’s entourage, according to Fabrizio Romano, because the 21-year-old Celta Vigo star has a release clause of £34 million and the La Liga club is unwilling to negotiate a cost lower than the one stated in his contract.

“During last and this week Liverpool had some conversations with people close to Gabri Veiga,” Romano said on the Here We Go podcast. “He’s a very electric player, I like him, I think he’s one of the best young players in the world. Liverpool are one of the most interested clubs in this player.

“We had reports of a done deal with Newcastle, that is not the case at all. Liverpool are interested in Gabri Veiga – there is a release clause, this is a big opportunity for Liverpool and they are thinking about that. This is the moment to think about the next step. Gabri Veiga is a name, Thuram is a name, Kone is a name. But honestly, I would not be surprised if Liverpool go for a player we didn’t mention today or another opportunity. Because they are like this. They like to find the right opportunity.”

Liverpool may have some outlandish names on their list, but Romeo Lavia is another talent who has been admired by Anfield officials. Arsenal, on the other hand, are ready to pair the Southampton midfielder with Declan Rice, despite the Saints’ £45m asking price for the former Manchester City star.

While Ryan Gravenberch is also of interest to Liverpool and is expected to be available this summer after failing to make an impression in his first season at Bayern Munich. The Netherlands international has recently stated his desire to play regular football and has opened the door to a move elsewhere.

“I had expected that I would get more chances and minutes than I eventually got. I had done very good preparation and thought I deserved it,” he told De Telegraaf. “I just want to play more, preferably at Bayern Munich. And otherwise at a club where I play 100 per cent.

“That’s my preference. Because I don’t want to have another year like the one I’ve had now. One like that. One season is good, I learned a lot. But I just want to play football.”
