Man City Faces Looming Risk of Losing Seven Players on Free Transfers in Upcoming Summer Window

The summer transfer window is rapidly approaching, and Manchester City may lose some players.

Manchester City’s summer transfer window is rapidly approaching, and it promises to be another exciting one.

It’s unlikely to be as eventful as last year, when four key players to City’s recent success – Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, and Aleks Zinchenko – all left and six new players were brought in. Pep Guardiola usually makes minor changes to his squad, but he took advantage of the opportunity last year to give his team a complete overhaul in order to keep them fresh and motivated.

Of course, Erling Haaland was the headline signing, heralding a shift in the Blues’ approach to matches after they went two years without a true striker. His addition has proven to be even more impressive than anyone anticipated, while Julian Alvarez and Manuel Akanji have also had promising starts to their careers in Manchester.

Instead of drastic changes, this time around, expect a return to normalcy, but that doesn’t mean the few additions won’t be exciting. Jude Bellingham is set to be the summer saga, and City is well placed in the race, particularly among Premier League clubs. Real Madrid may be strong competitors, but the allure of working with Guardiola and midfield maestros like Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva, as well as reuniting with Haaland, may be too appealing to pass up.

Despite the excitement, there is also the possibility of losing players. Bernardo, for example, has long desired a return to mainland Europe, Aymeric Laporte has been linked with a move away due to a lack of playing time, and Joao Cancelo may wish to convert his loan into a permanent move.

Ilkay Gundogan would be the biggest blow. This season, the German took over the captain’s armband from Fernandinho and has performed admirably. He is still one of Guardiola’s most trusted assistants and is frequently selected for the most important games due to the control and composure he brings to midfield.

Losing a player of such vast experience and elegance would be a crushing blow, especially given that City is looking to strengthen their midfield options with the addition of Bellingham rather than ending the summer with the same number of players. Barcelona have recently been linked with Gundogan, but no decision on his future has been made.

Scott Carson is the other first-teamer who could leave for free this summer. The third-choice goalkeeper, on the other hand, is on a rolling one-year contract that will almost certainly be extended for another season. Guardiola has repeatedly stated how influential the former England international is in the team’s locker room. However, youngster James Trafford, who has had an excellent season on loan at Bolton, may be pushing for a spot in the squad.

Several young players in the club’s youth system are also set to have their contracts expire this summer. Alex Robertson, a newly capped Australian international, Kian Breckin, Rowan McDonald, and goalkeepers Ciarán Slicker and Joshua McNamara could all depart.
