Manchester United’s executives must make a number of difficult decisions ahead of the summer transfer window, when the team will need to be reenergized.

Manchester United are ready to let go of a number of fringe players this summer, including centre-back Axel Tuanzebe. While the 25-year-old has mostly been forgotten at Old Trafford, it appeared for a while that he would break into the starting XI, with Red Devils veteran Rio Ferdinand among those who praised him.

Tuanzebe has been with United since 2006, when Ferdinand was only four years into his long tenure with the club. He made his first-team debut as a teenager but never really cemented a role in the backline, eventually going on loan spells.

Temporary experiences with Aston Villa and Napoli largely failed to produce results, and his most recent move to Stoke City was plagued by injuries. Tuanzebe will be released at the end of the season, according to the Manchester Evening News, when his contract expires.

Phil Jones, Ethan Galbraith, Ondrej Mastny, and Charlie Wellens are all leaving, while a number of other young players face uncertain futures.

Tuanzebe has not appeared in a competitive game for United since the 2021 Europa League final defeat to Villarreal. His demise was difficult to foretell in October 2020, when he had his best night for the Red Devils in a 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain, keeping megastar Kylian Mbappe hidden.

In France, he began on the right side of a makeshift back-three, capturing the attention with an athletic performance that had Ferdinand waxing lyrical during the Champions League group stages. Tuanzebe said to BT Sport that he has become undroppable.

“Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] has just said PSG have two of the best two strikers in the world. Tuanzebe snuffed out danger many a time today. You have to reward performances like that.

“He’s had a hard time with injuries – first game in 10 months – to come in and play like that, from in out of the cold, you deserve to be rewarded. But Ole is the man to make that decision.”

Given Tuanzebe’s poor injury record in recent years, it remains to be seen whether a Premier League club would be ready to take a chance on him.

The Red Devils junior product has made 37 appearances for the club and has been capped by England up to Under-21 level. Tuanzebe signed a new contract in 2021 and is expected to earn around £50,000 per week.

Taking big earners like Tuanzebe and Jones off the payroll this summer will be a comfort for manager Erik ten Hag, who is preparing to oversee another team change after his first full season in charge.
