Manchester United has released seven players as a result of Rasmus Hojlund’s verdict is delivered by Christian Eriksen.

Manchester United has announced their retained list for the 2023/24 season, with seven players leaving the club when their contracts expire.

Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are the two biggest names to leave Manchester United this summer, but a number of youth team players have also been released.

United has also stated that “discussions remain open” with David de Gea regarding a potential new contract.

Christian Eriksen has praised Manchester United target Rasmus Hojlund but admits he has yet to talk with Atalanta striker Erik ten Hag.

The midfielder also spoke about the problems that young players can experience at Old Trafford due to the club’s pressure. United have held talks with Hojlund about a summer transfer as they look for alternatives to top target Harry Kane.

Last season, the 20-year-old scored 16 goals, not adding the five he scored in two Denmark appearances during the March internationals. He’ll be back with the national squad for this weekend’s Euro 2024 qualifiers, alongside fellow countryman Eriksen.

Due to a knee injury, the 31-year-old has only started two games in the last three years. He did not train at all last season and was last seen on May 20 at Carrington. Since signing a new contract in February 2019, he has started 16 games and been substituted at halftime in five of them.

Tuanzebe has not appeared for United since the 2021 Europa League final. In 2022, the 25-year-old had another injury-plagued season and has just completed a four-month loan with Stoke City in the Championship, where he appeared just five times.

Ethan Galbraith, a Northern Ireland midfielder, has also departed the club. The 22-year-old spent last season on loan with League Two club Salford City and is already linked with a move to the Championship.

Galbraith’s only senior United debut came in November 2019 against Astana in the Europa League group stage. He is currently on international duty with Northern Ireland’s senior team.

United has chosen to release defender Di’Shon Bernard after declining to activate his clause, allowing the defender to join a new club permanently this summer.

Academy goalkeeper Eric Hanbury, striker Manni Norkett, and midfielder Charlie Wellens are all leaving the club but will be supported by the aftercare programme while looking for other opportunities.

United have used their option to extend Ethan Laird’s contract for another year, but he could still be moved this summer after another mixed loan stint at Queens Park Rangers.

Rhys Bennett, the FA Youth Cup-winning captain, has had his contract extended, and academy attacker Mateo Mejia has been granted a new contract. Under-21s player-coach Tom Huddlestone is expected to stay at the club following contract talks.

The club has also exercised its option to extend Nathan Bishop and Tom Heaton’s contracts by another year.

Mason Greenwood is listed as a United player, although the conclusion of their internal probe is unknown.
