Manchester City Announces Retained Squad List with Four Players Departing After Successful 2022/23 Season
Manchester City have issued their retained squad list for the 2023/24 season, with club captain Ilkay Gundogan among four players discharged.
The Premier League has issued retained and released lists ahead of contract expirations and season preparation, with Manchester City aiming for a fourth consecutive Premier League title next season.
Pep Guardiola’s team will open the new season at Turf Moor against Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, with the Blues having won the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club’s history last week.
Manchester City have officially released four players, including club captain Ilkay Gundogan, who could yet sign a new contract with the Sky Blues despite interest from Barcelona, Arsenal, and Borussia Dortmund.
The club has also released Benjamin Mendy, who has been suspended since August 2021.
In January, a jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision on two charges. Mendy is scheduled to stand trial again for those charges later this month.
Terrell Agyemang, a teenager, and defender Rowan McDonald have both been discharged, but the Premier League champions have retained 68 players.
Manchester City are expected to bolster their squad this summer, with Croatians Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol linked with moves to the Etihad Stadium.
West Ham captain Declan Rice is also being pursued by the Blues, however Arsenal currently have the lead in the race to recruit the England midfielder.
Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, and Bernardo Silva are among the players who have been retained, but all three have been linked with moves away from the Etihad Stadium.
