Marcus Rashford has uncovered the trait Kylian Mbappe loves about him at Manchester United

At Manchester United, Marcus Rashford has recovered the quality that Kylian Mbappe admires in him.
Marcus Rashford scored again as Manchester United defeated Nottingham Forest in the League Cup on Wednesday night.
When Marcus Rashford was compared to Kylian Mbappe, there were wry smiles. There may not be many of such at the present.

It’s a prevalent trend in modern football that players are constantly compared to their opponents, with an almost continual war for dominance, while social media serves as a battleground for disputes that have no objective solution and don’t require one.

What makes it even more ludicrous in the case of Rashford and Mbappe is that they see each other as friends rather than adversaries, and they both adore each other.
You’d have to look far and wide to find any better players than Mbappe and Rashford right now, and you’d be hard pushed to find anyone who fulfills their duties at all.

Premier League

Rashford’s spectacular solo effort in Manchester United’s triumph against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night made it 10 goals in 10 appearances since the World Cup. No player in Europe’s top five leagues has scored more goals than the English forward since the reintroduction of domestic football, which is an astounding accomplishment, even if he has played more matches in that era than others.
Mbappe has six goals in four games since his World Cup comeback, with five of them coming in the same game.

The fact that the Paris Saint-Germain forward has a plethora of trophies to his name will always give him an advantage in any comparisons. He has four league titles, five domestic cups, and the World Cup to his name. Rashford has two domestic cups and the Europa League to his name.

United will be confident of adding another trophy to their collection this season, and are favourites to win the League Cup, however a lack of silverware does not diminish Rashford’s individual accomplishments.

“From the first moment, I recognised huge potential,” Erik ten Hag said of his star forward last month. “And now to get out the potential, I believe when Marcus’s positioning is on the back of the defending line, there is almost no better player in the world.

“There is Mbappe in this moment, a type like him. But when he’s getting in that position, he’s great, and you see he’s really improved also out of possession.”

When Rashford is on his game, there are few players who pose the same direct danger that he does, as seen by his single goal in midweek.

With the 25-year-style old’s of play so tightly tied to his own self-belief, it was a goal that simply would not have been scored last season when he was on a dry run.

This confidence has seen him play the finest football of his career, and it is this confidence that Mbappe feels separates Rashford from most other forwards.

What’s Trending

“He’s one of the most dangerous forward players in England,” Mbappe said of the United forward ahead of a Champions League group-stage meeting between United and PSG in 2020. “Paul Pogba has spoken about how special he is, and he doesn’t talk about players in such a way often. When you take a penalty in that situation (against PSG in 2019), how much practice you have put on the training ground doesn’t matter. It’s about confidence, and he’s a player who plays with so much confidence.”

The goal for United is to maintain Rashford’s confidence high and to protect him from becoming burdened by the rising expectation that is developing by the week.

He’ll need his teammates’ aid to relieve the burden on him to be the match-winner every week, and he’ll need Ten Hag’s help to manage his minutes judiciously to avoid fatigue.

In a year when United will be looking to recruit an elite forward, they have been reminded yet again that they already have one.
