Mason Greenwood has been retained by Manchester United despite his ban, as the club announces seven departures.

Even though he is no longer facing charges, United has suspended Greenwood, 22, pending the outcome of an internal investigation into whether he brought the club into disrepute and breached his contract.

Despite his suspension, Mason Greenwood has been added to Manchester United’s retained list.

The Manchester United forward was suspended after being charged with rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing serious bodily harm.

However, on February 2, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges when crucial witnesses opted to withdraw their participation.

Even though he is no longer charged, Greenwood, 22, is nonetheless suspended by United pending the conclusion of an internal investigation into whether he brought the club into shame and breached his contract.

Even though he was out of contract on June 30, David De Gea was not placed on the retained list. United claim talks with De Gea on a new contract are ongoing.

Greenwood has been on the retain list for the past 18 months, following his arrest in January 2022.

This is because he is still under contract. United have emphasized that including him on the list does not indicate the outcome of the ongoing internal disciplinary investigation.

“In terms of the goalkeeping department, discussions remain open with David De Gea over a potential new contract, while Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had extensions triggered on their deals,” United said in a statement.Extensions were also granted to defenders Rhys Bennett and Ethan Laird, while Under-21s player coach Tom Huddlestone is poised to stay following contract negotiations.

“Young forward Mateo Mejia has also been offered a deal.”

United also confirmed the departures of seven players in the announcement, including defenders Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe.

“Ethan Galbraith and Di’Shon Bernard are seeking new opportunities elsewhere after loan spells at Salford City and Portsmouth, respectively,” United stated. Both made their first-team debuts for Manchester United in a Europa League match against Astana in Kazakhstan in 2019.

“After the end of their current terms, Eric Hanbury, Charlie Wellens, and Manni Norkett will leave the Academy.” The Academy is proud of all of our departing young players and their accomplishments during their time at the club. They will all be assisted in obtaining professional contracts at new clubs, will receive a tailored aftercare package, and will have a lifelong link with Manchester United.”
