Mauricio Pochettino Attributes Chelsea’s 2-1 Defeat to Manchester United to Fatigue
Mauricio Pochettino, the Chelsea manager, has attributed the team’s 2-1 defeat against Manchester United to fatigue, although he acknowledged it is not an excuse for failing to match the Red Devils’ energy and aggression.

After Bruno Fernandes had a penalty saved by Robert Sanchez, Scott McTominay scored twice to secure a crucial win for United at Old Trafford. Despite Cole Palmer’s goal for Chelsea before halftime, it marked the team’s sixth defeat of the season.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Pochettino expressed not being worried about the defeat, emphasizing various circumstances affecting Chelsea’s performance. He highlighted an extensive injury list, players serving suspensions, and the challenge of playing with a numerical disadvantage against Brighton.

Pochettino mentioned missing key players like Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, Trevoh Chalobah, and Ben Chilwell due to injuries. He admitted that the team played with almost the same lineup as against Brighton, where they were a man down for a significant part of the game.

Acknowledging that Manchester United had an extra day of preparation, Pochettino stressed that it’s not an excuse but a reality. He noted that the team needs to recover players, have different options, and be more competitive.

Regarding the opponents, Pochettino observed that Manchester United had more time to prepare and had many young players on Chelsea’s bench. He mentioned that while Chelsea gave everything, they couldn’t match the energy and aggressiveness of the Red Devils.

In contrast, Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, stating that they dominated the opponent both in and out of possession. He enjoyed watching his team play and emphasized the importance of the ongoing process and improvement.

Ten Hag addressed the team’s response to criticism, noting that they remain focused on self-improvement and are not quickly satisfied. Despite the long season ahead, he believes the team is capable of achieving success but acknowledges the need for continuous improvement.
