Mikel Arteta demands a reaction from Arsenal if Sheikh Jassim completes his takeover of Manchester United.

Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal should seize their opportunity now that Manchester United is about to be taken over.

If Manchester United becomes the next state-owned Premier League team, Mikel Arteta wants Arsenal to retaliate on the field. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari investor Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani are the two frontrunners for a £5 billion takeover of United.

If the Glazers accept the Qatari deal, United will become the third English Premier League club to be owned by a state. Abu Dhabi has made significant investments in Manchester City over the last decade, and the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund took over Newcastle last year.

Arsenal, owned by American billionaire Stan Kroenke, could enter the 2023-24 season as the only Premier League club not supported by a national government. And Arteta believes Arsenal must capitalize on their current position before their competitors catch up, as they attempt to close the gap on league leaders Manchester City to one point at Newcastle tonight (4.30pm).

“It is the ideal time because this is the moment – right now,” the Spanish manager said ahead of the trip to St James’ Park. “The best time is when you have something and strive to take it, especially in elite sports…

“Because you don’t know when you are going to have another opportunity. That is what we’re trying to do. We’re going to Newcastle to win and continue to be there.

“We have to compete with those teams, for sure, because we are Arsenal Football Club. The demands are to be the best in everything we do, so we have to find a way to do that.”

Arsenal were held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle at the Emirates in January, and their most recent visit to the north east ended in a 2-0 defeat at the end of last season. That defeat followed a defeat against Tottenham, effectively ending their chances of finishing in the top four.

When asked if the Gunners are out for vengeance in Newcastle, Arteta responded, “We felt like this when we went to Tottenham, and then we won that game. We’re capable of doing it, but we need to show it – on the pitch.”

Eddie Howe’s side, along with Arsenal, have been among the most outstanding teams in the division this season, but Arteta confesses he is unsure whether they will be title challengers next season. Instead, Arteta anticipates significant change throughout the summer.

When asked about Newcastle’s chances of winning the Premier League next season, Arsene Wenger said,  “I don’t know. They’ve performed really well and deserve to be where they are. We have done the same. But next season will be something completely different, in my opinion.”
