Mikel Arteta will be upset when Arsenal’s primary transfer target agrees to a new contract.

Arsenal have suffered a big setback following the announcement that Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo has extended his contract with the club.

Mikel Arteta was the subject of two proposals in January, the second of which was rumored to be worth up to £70 million.

Meanwhile, many rumours suggested that the Gunners will re-sign the player in the summer.

Brighton, on the other hand, have stated that the Ecuador international has committed to a long-term future at the Amex.

In an unexpected turn of events, Caicedo has agreed to renegotiate terms with the club, signing a new contract that will keep him at the Amex until 2027, with an option for an additional year.

According to respected writer Fabrizio Romano, Caicedo will also earn a big pay raise.

With a slew of elite teams interested in signing the excellent midfielder, including Chelsea, his decision may come as a surprise. But, the Blues chose to sign Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez instead.

Caicedo made his intentions to leave the south coast club public in January.

Despite his best efforts, the Seagulls held firm, forcing Arsenal to instead buy Jorginho from Chelsea on deadline day.

Following the agreement, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi said: “This is fantastic news for the club, our fans, for me and most importantly for Moises.

“It will make us stronger as we move forward towards our targets on the pitch.”
