Mount’s Verdict: Honest Assessment as Potter Forced to Make Changes for Aston Villa Clash
Mason Mount has been open about his thoughts on what has been a difficult season for him both personally and professionally. Mount’s season has been far from fruitful, with only three goals to his name despite having played more minutes in the Chelsea squad than only Kai Havertz.
As a result, there appears to be an openness for the England international to leave this summer, with contract talks between the player and club stalled. Under Graham Potter, the 24-year-old has found regular starting berths far more difficult to come by than under previous managers Thomas Tuchel and Frank Lampard.
This off-field speculation, combined with a relative drop in the pecking order, has clubs circling the midfielder in an attempt to snare him for a bargain this summer. As Mount enters the final year of his Chelsea contract, Liverpool appear to have moved to the front of the line.
“It’s been tough and I think you learn a lot from a season like this and you can grow a lot,” he told clothing retailer Matches Fashion. “Maybe I’m not going to achieve the goals I set at the beginning of this year.
“You look at it like: ‘Why did that happen? How can I affect that for next year? How can I do better?’ We’ve still got some more to go and hopefully another competition to try and win.”
Graham Potter has been compelled to make some alterations to the Chelsea squad due to several players being uncertain to play against Aston Villa. Reece James is struggling with an injury, and Kai Havertz was forced to leave the Germany squad due to illness.
Other players like Cesar Azpilicueta, Mason Mount, and Wesley Fofana are also trying to regain their fitness, while Edouard Mendy, Raheem Sterling, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have been pictured in training.
Even though Potter may be forced to change the team, he might have some new tactics in mind after only managing to secure a draw against Everton. With Liverpool as the next opponent, Potter may also have to make some decisions with that game in mind.
