Phil Foden has expressed his desire to change his position at Manchester City, stating that he is certain about wanting to move.

Phil Foden has expressed his desire to change his position at Manchester City in the upcoming seasons. Despite originally playing in midfield during his time in the Manchester City Academy, Foden has adapted to playing in wide positions under Pep Guardiola, mainly on the left of a front three. This was due to the competition for places in the central areas of the pitch at the Etihad club. Foden has been performing well in his current position, but he has openly admitted to wanting a positional switch.

Even though Phil Foden delivered an outstanding performance over the weekend, scoring a stunning goal after dribbling past five defenders from the right-wing position, he remains determined to secure a place in the midfield for Manchester City in the future.

After the 2-0 victory against Newcastle United on Saturday, Foden openly stated that he intends to transition to midfield in the upcoming years, saying, “It’s a move that I certainly want to make in the next few years.”

“I’ve always seen myself playing there. Hopefully, I can adapt and become a midfielder — that’s my aim.

Foden continued, “I feel like I could possibly get a chance there. I love to score goals and the manager sees that and prefers me wide. I enjoy playing anywhere.”

Given the anticipated significant changes in Manchester City’s first-team personnel this summer, there may be more chances for Phil Foden to play in midfield next season. This is especially true considering the uncertainty surrounding players such as Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, and Kalvin Phillips.

If Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff believe that Foden has developed enough to take on the duties of a central midfielder, Manchester City may choose to focus more on recruiting in the wide attacking positions.

Speaking during a recent press conference, City boss Guardiola hinted at utilising Foden in midfield when his side requires ‘runners’, as he explained, “When I want runners in attacking midfield, I’d put Phil (Foden), (Ilkay) Gundo. They’re better than Kevin (De Bruyne) when it’s more close to the box. When I want more control, I’d play Bernardo (Silva), I’d play another type of player.”
