Pochettino Contemplating Exception to Chelsea Transfer Rule for Thiago Silva Replacement After Man Utd Match
Mauricio Pochettino is considering the possibility of deviating from Chelsea’s transfer policies in search of a replacement for Thiago Silva, especially after the recent match against Manchester United.

At the age of 39, Silva continues to set records at Chelsea as the oldest outfield player in the club’s history, challenging conventional notions of biology and aging.

He stands out as the oldest player in Pochettino’s squad, surpassing even the third oldest player, Ben Chilwell, by over 12 years and outliving the youngest player, Deivid Washington, by more than two decades.
Even playing a few games at this level at his age is noteworthy, with Silva already accumulating 15 starts this season, playing every minute of every league game so far.

Pochettino’s reliance on Silva has surpassed that of previous managers, raising debates about whether Silva should still be a central figure in the team, a topic that has persisted since his first year at Stamford Bridge.

Despite being surrounded by younger players, Silva is playing more than ever. However, issues with the defense’s leakiness from set pieces, recent frailty in playing through a press, and a failure to keep a clean sheet in two months have become prominent concerns.

Pochettino initially sought Silva for his experience and passing abilities but now faces the challenge of potential limitations.
Changes to the defensive lineup, including playing Levi Colwill at left-back and shifting other players to accommodate Silva, have been partly forced by injuries and suspensions.

Chelsea’s defensive struggles, exemplified by allowing more than 25 shots at goal against Manchester United, have raised questions about Silva’s lack of mobility and its impact on Pochettino’s aggressive playing style.
Silva’s potential departure, along with discussions about his future, has led to reports that Chelsea is actively searching for a new defender in 2024, a move that could affect Silva’s role.

One player linked to Chelsea is Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, a 27-year-old defender with a reported release clause until 2025. While Silva’s departure isn’t imminent, the ongoing debates suggest that disagreements about his future are becoming a regular occurrence.
