Speculating on Liverpool’s Potential Shirt Number Changes for the Upcoming Summer Transfer Window

There have been a slew of new kit leaks for fans to choose from as they plan their summer purchases, and the name/number combination on the back will also provide a plethora of options.

With a number of high-profile players set to leave for free this summer if new contracts are not reached, some of the most popular shirt numbers will be available for both new and existing Liverpool players.

A slew of younger players are likely to be on the lookout for an upgrade, and senior players may also be considering a change.

Fans will be interested to see what prospective signings will wear on their backs in the 2023/24 season, and there are plenty of options.

In this section, we speculate on some of the changes we might see and what they might mean for newcomers.

What are the available numbers?

Sadio Mane’s departure last summer left the No. 10 shirt vacant, joining Nos. 12, 16, 24, 25, 30, and 31 to take us all the way up to Joel Matip at No. 32.

Contract expirations for various senior players may also mean that Nos. 7, 8, 9, 13, 15, and 29 will all be available for next season.

Unless circumstances change unexpectedly, it almost certainly leaves arguably the four most sought-after numbers, Nos. 7, 8, 9, and 10, all free.

When it comes to selecting their numbers for the 2023/24 season, both new and returning squad members will have plenty of options.

Which current players could be replaced?

In the past, players like Mane and Roberto Firmino have opted to switch when certain numbers became available.

Mane jumped from No. 19 to No. 10 in the summer of 2018, just a year after Firmino jumped from No. 11 to No. 9.

Changes like these can be inconvenient because many fans will have already purchased new kits with the player’s previous number on the back.

Firmino, in his case, offered to sign every No. 11 shirt that summer to make up for the change.

Many fans are calling for Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez to be given new jersey numbers, with many calling for the South American duo to be given Nos. 7 and 9, respectively.

Stefan Bajcetic’s increased role within the squad may also result in a lower shirt number than his current No. 43.

The Spaniard could follow in the footsteps of Dietmar Hamann and Marko Grujic by wearing the No. 16 shirt.

New signees

Fans will be most interested to see which numbers any new signings will take over among all of the potential new combinations.

The name Jude Bellingham is still on everyone’s lips, and with his current Borussia Dortmund number being occupied by Liverpool’s No. 22 Calvin Ramsay, the focus naturally shifts to the No. 8 shirt.

Because of his open admiration for Steven Gerrard, the 19-year-old would be first in line for Naby Keita’s shirt if the Guinean leaves this summer and Bellingham moves to Anfield.

Mason Mount has also been linked, and given the attacking nature of his current role, he could be an ideal candidate for the vacant No. 10 jersey.
