Ten Hag defends Martial’s role and warns Pellistri to seize chances at Manchester United

Erik ten Hag has come to the defense of Anthony Martial and cautioned the young players at Manchester United. Despite concerns about his injury history, the coach believes that Martial can still be a valuable asset to the team.

Although the 27-year-old played a significant role in the first half of the season, he has had a number of injury setbacks that have hindered his progress. As a result, Martial has only played four games since the beginning of the year and has been absent from the team’s last 12 matches in all competitions.

Although Erik ten Hag will once again be without Anthony Martial for the upcoming FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham, he maintains that the French forward could still make a significant contribution to the team before the end of the season.

‘I don’t think it is the right moment if that would be the case,’ said the United boss. “I believe in him. Every time he is available, he really gave a good contribution to the team performance.

‘The level of the team is upgraded the moment he is available. We are just working with him to get fit and to be available.’

Asked if the Frenchman should be prepared to push his body a bit more, Ten Hag said: ‘Every person is different, so you have to treat everyone differently. This process you have to take really carefully. I do everything to get him available.’

Facundo Pellistri, who made his first start for Manchester United in the game against Seville, showcased his talent once again after an impressive European debut in the home leg.

The 21-year-old Uruguayan winger could be given more opportunities, especially with Alejandro Garnacho out due to injury, and Antony’s availability uncertain for the Fulham match due to illness.

However, Erik ten Hag cautioned Pellistri that he must make the most of every chance he gets if he wants to secure a future for himself at Old Trafford. The Dutch coach emphasized that Pellistri needs to earn his opportunities and work hard to prove himself.

‘We will help him with the culture, the way of play, the coaches, really working hard for them. But the players have to take their chances, they have to deserve their chances by performing every day on and off the pitch.

‘He has the abilities to do it, like others coming up from the youth like Garnacho, like Kobbie Mainoo. Pellistri is also one of them, and there are more who can do it. But you have to contribute to the team.

‘Manchester United is not a place where we can have the patience to try one for 10 games – you have to perform.’
