Ten Hag Clarifies Decision to Keep Garnacho on Bench Despite Man Utd’s Struggle for Goals Against West Ham.

Erik ten Hag has explained why Alejandro Garnacho remained on the bench against West Ham despite Manchester United’s lack of an attacking spark.

The Red Devils came close to breaking through numerous times against the Hammers, but they were forced to endure another pointless journey out on the road as the hosts won 1-0 at the London Stadium.

United were finally undone by a costly error from David de Gea, but they could have grabbed something from the game had they not been so barren in the final third.

Ten Hag had the option of bringing in teenage winger Garnacho, but he was an unused replacement as Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho, Marcel Sabitzer, Fred, and Diogo Dalot saw time ahead of him.

When asked why a potential game-changer like Garnacho was left on the bench, United manager Ten Hag told reporters: “He was on the bench, then, of course, he is capable of playing.” But we had other choices in Martial, Jadon Sancho, and Sabitzer. When offensive and fit – extremely fit – guys are present, you have to play them.

“But you have to see in one week, it’s one week extra, and he is brave, he can make a difference, yeah.” We tried to change them, as you can see, but it’s always difficult when you’re losing. You saw the squad wanted, they put in a lot of effort, and on occasion, they go in the wrong spots, forcing too much, too early, which is detrimental.

So we must learn from such situations to remain calm and composed in order to create opportunities. We had some chances, the finest of which I believe was Martial, but we need to generate more.”

Garnacho has not played for United since March 12, due to an unfortunate injury, but the 18-year-old is back to full fitness and should be full of confidence after signing a new long-term contract at Old Trafford.

United, who are just one spot and one point ahead of archrivals Liverpool in the race for a top-four finish, return to action on Saturday when they face Wolves.
