The pros and weaknesses of Kai Havertz as Arsenal negotiates a £50 million summer transfer

Arsenal looks at what they will gain from Kai Havertz if he joins them from London rivals Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

Just when it appeared that Arsenal’s summer transfer targets were plain and obvious, a fairly shocking link to Kai Havertz emerged.

And the enthusiasm, the real deal. Despite rumours that the 24-year-old has already accepted personal terms with the Gunners, a deal may be difficult to complete due to Chelsea’s asking price and Bayern Munich’s interest.

As things stand, there is still a long way to go before both teams agree on a deal for Havertz, as the Blues demand £70 million, but with the Germany international entering the final two years of his contract at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal value him at a much lesser fee.

It remains to be seen whether the London rivals can reach an agreement, but with the forward currently on international duty until next Tuesday, there may be no meaningful changes until Hansi Flick’s side plays Colombia in a friendly.

Many people are surprised by Arsenal’s interest in Havertz because Mikel Arteta has plenty of options in attack with Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard, not to mention Emile Smith Rowe and Reiss Nelson, who is expected to sign a new contract.

However, with the Spaniard looking for a versatile attacker this summer, it’s apparent why he’s eyeing the Chelsea star, who has played as the club’s center striker, number 10 and right winger since his £70 million arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2020.

Havertz is far from unknown to Arsenal fans, having played in the Premier League for three complete seasons. But, for those unfamiliar with his playing, what kind of player will the north London club acquire if technical director Edu Gaspar is successful in securing a £50 million deal?

Based on the last two seasons, Havertz’s four primary strengths are aerial duels, passing, ball retention, and defensive involvement. Meanwhile, his playing style has been described as someone who likes to play short passes, tackle frequently, and commit fouls frequently.

According to this description, signing Havertz would give Arsenal a different option in attack, as his aerial prowess is something Arteta’s side can benefit from, having lacked it towards the end of the 2022/23 season, and his ability to make the ball stick up front allows him to combine effectively with the wide players.

However, with offside awareness listed as his only weakness and ‘finishing’ not mentioned among his strengths, it’s clear where Havertz needs to improve for this potential transfer to be considered a success, as he would need to break into double figures for goals across all competitions for only the second time since arriving in England.
