🔄 Three Potential Replacements for Mason Mount at Chelsea Amid Reported Man Utd Agreement and Sandro Tonali Transfer

Mason Mount appears certain to join Manchester United this summer, while target Sandro Tonali is close to a deal with Newcastle. It means that Chelsea must consider fresh possibilities.

As Mauricio Pochettino’s roster takes shape, Chelsea’s summer transfer season appears to be dominated by exits in the early stages. After a season in which a bloated dressing room struggled with stability, with a lot of changes to the starting lineup every week, the need for outgoings is evident.

Six deals have already been agreed upon, clearing the way for Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Hakim Ziyech to join N’Golo Kante in Saudi Arabia next season. Mateo Kovacic, who is in the final year of his contract, has decided to join Manchester City.

Kai Havertz is likely to have a physical with Arsenal in the coming days, after the two London teams agreed on a fee and personal terms. Mason Mount, a Cobham Academy alumnus, might possibly be on his way out as he enters his final year under contract.

A move to Manchester United appears to be on the cards, with sources claiming that a £60 million deal is “close” for this summer. If the 24-year-old leaves, there will be a definite need for a replacement, with Pochettino seeking to develop the squad in the future.

Sandro Tonali was mentioned as a possible replacement, although his anticipated move to Newcastle appears to be almost complete at this point. With that considered, here are some of the potential options for Mount that the Blues could pursue during the summer transfer window.

Enzo Fernandez/Moises Caicedo

Mount has spent the last few seasons as an attacking midfielder, but his job under Pochettino would be as a midfield number eight in a 4-3-3 formation. In that case, Chelsea may already have a ready-made substitute in Enzo Fernandez, who played as a number six in the second half of last season but has been mentioned as a player who can play farther forward.

While this would assist fix some problems, a replacement in the deeper midfield role would be required, which Brighton’s Moises Caicedo might help facilitate.

Nicolo Barella

Inter Milan appear to be planning a number of exits to aid with their current financial woes, making someone like Nicolo Barella available. Given the interest in Trevoh Chalobah and Romelu Lukaku, a deal in which they trade Stamford Bridge for the San Siro might also help.

Barella is a box-to-box midfielder who, at 26 years old, will be approaching his prime if he joins Chelsea this summer. His tireless work at both ends of the field would come in handy in a midfield three, replacing probably Mount’s strongest feature, his off-the-ball skill.

Gabri Veiga

Gabri Veiga, 21, enjoyed a breakout season for Celta Vigo in La Liga last season, scoring 11 goals and assisting four in 36 appearances as the club avoided relegation. With a release clause in his contract and at such a young age, it’s no surprise that the Spaniard is being pursued.

The midfielder might suit Chelsea well in the advanced eight role, providing some goal scoring flair to the team after a season in which the Blues lacked just that.
