Chelsea are likely to slash their first-team roster ahead of the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea star Kalidou Koulibaly is reportedly already on the chopping block as the Blues’ first-team squad is expected to be reduced this summer. The seasoned defender, who has just been at Stamford Bridge for a year, could be on his way out.

When Koulibaly joined ahead of the 2022-23 season, the Blues secured a long-term aim. However, the Senegal international has had a difficult season in West London and appears to be on his way out.

Koulibaly has battled for form since joining from Napoli, and the 31-year-old’s game time has been reduced in recent months. He was an unused replacement in Chelsea’s 4-1 loss to Manchester United on Thursday, while a hamstring ailment kept him out for the majority of April and May.

Chelsea appears to have two challenges in trying to move Koulibaly this summer. The first is that international clubs are unlikely to accept the defender’s reported weekly salary of £300,000.

Koulibaly also wishes to remain at Chelsea for another season in order to demonstrate his worth. The former Genk player does not want to be remembered at Stamford Bridge for a single poor season.

Koulibaly was signed for a massive £33 million deal and given a four-year contract. However, his stint at the club appears to be coming to an end this summer, making him the first Todd Boehly signing to leave the organization.

Chelsea are reportedly looking to trim their first-team roster ahead of the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino. After an astonishing £600m spending binge throughout both transfer windows this season, the squad currently has well over 30 players, with Boehly planning to cut the cost this year.

Graham Potter and Frank Lampard have both complained about the size of the squad and how it has hampered match preparations. Pochettino is said to desire young players to form the core of his squad, like he did during his illustrious tenure as manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

The Argentine is expected to be named Chelsea’s new head coach soon. He will take over a side that is stuck in the bottom part of the Premier League and lacking in confidence.

On Thursday, United thrashed Chelsea 4-1, leaving Lampard with a record of eight defeats and one triumph in ten games. On the final day of the season, Chelsea will face Newcastle.
