Ibrahima Konate, a Liverpool defender, has slammed the comparison between Virgil van Dijk and his international teammate Dayot Upamecano.

Ibrahima Konate has revealed the similarities between Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and his France teammate Dayot Upamecano.

Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2018, is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in the world.

The 31-year-old has made 212 appearances for the Reds, scoring 19 goals and assisting on 12 occasions.

He has assisted Jurgen Klopp’s team in winning every available trophy, including the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup, Premier League, Emirates FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and the Community Shield earlier this season.

In an interview with Eurosport France, Konate stated that his club teammate Van Dijk has an aura on the pitch and is an exceptional talent.

“What kind of question is that? You can’t compare the two,” the 23-year-old said.

“With Upamecano, we are in the same category even if he is a very high competitor.

But Van Dijk, I put him on a different planet.

“We’re still a long way from achieving what he did. Although we will get there one day, I have no doubt.”

The France international added, “Leadership, he has such an ease in defending on certain players.”

“He has his own technique, it’s incredible. His determination, his drive… He has an aura on the pitch, you always feel it.

“It’s an exceptional chance to play with him. But I also have to look at my career and not look at him as a fan all the time.”
