Chelsea’s Mason Mount excluded from Leicester City match despite fitness

Despite being fully fit, Chelsea’s Mason Mount was not included in the squad for their game against Leicester City. Chelsea went on to secure a 3-1 victory, with Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, and Mateo Kovacic scoring goals. Wesley Fofana responded humorously to taunts directed at him on social media during the match. Mount’s exclusion from the squad was a major talking point, as it was initially assumed to be due to an injury. However, it has now been revealed that it was a decision made by the club and Graham Potter. Chelsea has won their last three matches across all competitions.

Reports suggest that Mason Mount, who is 24 years old, is fully fit and available to play, but he was not included in the matchday squad for the game against Leicester City. This is apparently due to a contract dispute that is ongoing between Mount and Chelsea. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club is currently leaving him out of the team because of this issue. Mount, who is an England international and an academy product of Chelsea, has yet to agree to a new contract with the club. The two sides are at odds over the demands being made by Mount. His current deal is set to expire in 2024, and several teams including Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Liverpool are reportedly monitoring the situation and considering making a move for him.

Speaking ahead of his side’s game against Leicester, Potter described the contract talks between Mount and the club as ‘complicated’.

He said: “I’ve spoken to him several times about his situation, football, and life generally.

“My feelings for Mason are clear. He’s a fantastic person firstly, but sometimes these things happen.

“They’re complicated, and it’s best I speak little about it, let them get on with it in deciding what is right for both parties.”

Asked if Mount is part of his plans for next season, Potter replied: “Yes.”

He added: “But I’m not naive, and I know it’s an important time for him and an important contract.

“These things have to be right for him, and his family, and it’s important he makes a decision on that basis.”

Will Mount still be a Chelsea player next season? Watch this space.
