Why is Casemiro suspended for 4 games?
The specifics of Casemiro’s suspension have been revealed, and it has been confirmed that he will be unavailable for the next four domestic games of Manchester United, as a result of being red-carded during the match against Southampton on Sunday. However, it should be noted that this suspension will not affect his eligibility to participate in European competitions. Additionally, it includes the top-four clash game.

Following his red card for a reckless tackle on Carlos Alcaraz during Manchester United’s game against Southampton, Casemiro, the 31-year-old Brazilian midfielder, will be serving a four-game suspension for domestic matches. Although he was first shown a yellow card, the decision was overturned after a review by VAR. As he had already received a red card earlier this season, the standard three-game ban has been extended to four. This suspension will have significant consequences for United’s campaigns in the Premier League and FA Cup over the next month.
Casemiro’s four-game domestic suspension will rule him out of Manchester United’s important Premier League fixtures against Newcastle, Brentford, and Everton, as well as their FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham at Old Trafford.
However, this ban does not apply to European competitions, meaning he will be eligible to play in the second leg of United’s last-16 Europa League clash against Real Betis on Thursday, where they hold a commanding 4-1 lead. If United make it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, Casemiro will also be available. Nevertheless, the red card is a setback for United’s domestic ambitions as Casemiro has played a crucial role in their success this season, including their Carabao Cup victory.
Last summer, Casemiro was acquired by Manchester United from Real Madrid in a transfer worth £70 million. Interestingly, he had never been shown a straight red card during his tenure with the Spanish giants. His first red card this season came during the 1-0 home victory against Crystal Palace in February. After being shown the red card against Southampton, Casemiro appeared visibly upset and had to be comforted by his compatriot Antony before leaving the pitch.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, United defender Phil Jones spoke about the importance of Casemiro to the team, stating that he has a calming influence on the players and is instrumental in setting up attacks. Jones further explained that Casemiro’s presence on the field inspires the team to perform better.
“He is very infectious and the way he leads and the way he plays his football you know. Everybody sees that and feeds off him. You can see how successful they have been when he’s been in the team.”
Ten Hag has previously said, “Casemiro has not surprised me – absolutely not. I knew what a magnificent player he was. Just look at his profile, all the cups he’s won, that’s not a coincidence… he has won five Champions Leagues, that’s not a coincidence.”
Ten Hag added, “Casemiro is such a leader and so important for us. Not only with his performances and skills, like scoring goals with his headers, or linking up, or intercepting balls, but also his organisation, his mentality, the culture he projects.”
