“Wonderful memories” – Mateo Kovacic breaks his silence on Chelsea’s future and Manchester City transfer rumors

Mateo Kovacic has spoken out for the first time about his Chelsea future after being granted permission to negotiate a summer transfer with Manchester City.

The 29-year-old is expected to be part of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad overhaul this summer as he prepares for the 2023/24 season.

Chelsea are prepared to cash in on Kovacic, who is out of contract next summer, with Man City expecting to sign him this summer for about £30-40 million, which is the Blues’ asking price.

Personal terms are not believed to be an issue with the Premier League champions, but a sum between the clubs must still be agreed upon.

Kovacic was quizzed about his future at Stamford Bridge while on international duty with Croatia before of their Nations League semi-final match against the Netherlands this week.

After a’really poor season’ in which Chelsea finished 12th in the Premier League, the midfielder remained tight-lipped.

He told Yahoo Deportes, “I have one year left on my contract with Chelsea.” It’s been a terrible season. Everything points to me changing the atmosphere after five years, but we’ll see what happens.

“Right now I’m only focused on Croatia and the Nations League.”

Manchester City is now preparing for this week’s Champions League final in Istanbul, Turkey. They will face Kovacic’s former club Inter Milan.

Kovacic praised his prospective future club, but was quick to praise his five-year stint at Chelsea, which he joined on loan from Real Madrid in 2018 before making the transfer permanent a year later.

He added: “Manchester City is a top team and deserves to be in the Champions League final. That’s what I have to say. The summer is long, we’ll see what happens.

Chelsea for me is phenomenal. I love the city and the fans, they love me, I have wonderful memories of Chelsea. We’ll see what happens.”
